NZI Safe Driving Rewards
Insurance Excess Waiver Programme

Helping businesses turn everyday safe driving into real financial benefits.

NZI’s Safe Driving Rewards is a unique New Zealand programme that uses telematics data to reward safe driving with the financial benefit of an excess waiver, when a driving loss occurs.

The programme has been running successfully for over 10 years, in partnership with EROAD, incentivising safe driving behaviour and supporting New Zealand businesses to build better driving cultures. NZI Safe Driving Rewards has already helped NZI customers save more than $3 million in waived excess payments for heavy motor vehicle claims.

From 12 May 2026, Safe Driving Rewards benefits are also available for light commercial vehicles.

Who is it for?

If your commercial motor vehicle fleet is insured with NZI or Lumley and has eligible EROAD hardware and an EROAD** service plan, you can join at no cost.

The programme is available to fleets of any size, from one vehicle to more than 1,000 and you can sign up at any time throughout your insurance period.

How it works.

Driving data is assessed by EROAD for safety performance. Top ranking fleets receive the NZI Safe Driving Rewards green tick on their EROAD reports.

If a driving loss occurs, and a fleet is in the top 25% of EROAD subscribers for safe driving (based on average safety score for the 28 days before the accident), NZI will waive the excess on the claim*.

**EROAD hardware and service subscription costs are charged separately to this programme.

Where a policy is subject to a Burning Cost or Profit Share adjustment, obtaining an excess waiver under the Excess Waiver programme may result in a higher premium for that policy. This is because the premium adjustment at the end of the insurance period is calculated based on the total claims cost for the period, including claims that would otherwise have been subject to an excess. Brokers should discuss potential client impacts with their NZI representative.

FAQs

NZI’s Safe Driving Rewards, in conjunction with EROAD, is designed to reward Kiwi businesses who demonstrate safe driving behaviour.

Through the programme, NZI and Lumley policy holders with commercial motor vehicle insurance, who are also EROAD customers, are incentivised to improve their driving safety rating. If their driving safety rating puts them in the top 25% of EROAD customers in New Zealand, they may be eligible to have their insurance excess waived in the event of a claim*.

*Please read our terms and conditions for full details of this programme.

Businesses who join the programme will have the opportunity to have an accepted, qualifying claim excess waived if their driving safety rating puts them in the top 25% of EROAD customers in New Zealand in the 28 days preceding the claimed loss.

By rewarding commercial fleets for setting high standards in driver behaviour, we aim to not just produce better insurance products for our customers, but to encourage continued improvement in driving across the commercial vehicle industry, ultimately making New Zealand’s roads safer for everyone.

Joining the programme is simple. Just complete the signup form on this page.

You will receive confirmation by email that you’ve successfully registered for the programme.

NZI will advise your insurance broker that you have joined the programme.

No — the excess waiver only applies if your vehicle is involved in a driving loss that is covered by your policy.

Therefore, your usual insurance excess will apply for non-driving claims. Your excess will depend on the type of loss and your policy terms.

Commercial motor vehicles that are insured with NZI or Lumley, and equipped with an eligible EROAD hardware device, which is on an EROAD subscription plan that includes vehicle tracking and EROAD Leaderboard.

No. If interested, please contact your broker to get a quote for your insurance with NZI or Lumley. A list of brokers can be found here.

Simply contact EROAD at www.eroad.co.nz or on 0800 4 EROAD to enquire about EROAD products and services. Please note that you need to be an EROAD customer; and have been accepted into the Programme, for 28 days before you can take advantage of the Safe Driving Rewards Programme.

Your EROAD driving safety rating is based on a combination of the distance travelled and the frequency and severity of speeding events, harsh acceleration and harsh braking.

You will be able to see if you have performed in the top 25% of all EROAD customers in the preceding 28 days using the Leaderboard report in MyEROAD.

NZI will have access to the customer's EROAD Safe Driving Rewards Eligibility Report or Leaderboard Report and Daily Activity Report that the customer shares with NZI as part of their insurance claim. This will be used to determine whether the excess waiver should be applied.

The Leaderboard Report is available for qualifying customers via EROAD’s web-based MyEROAD platform. To sign in to MyEROAD please go to my.eroad.co.nz

You will leave the programme when any of the following occur:

  • you email frm@nzi.co.nz requesting to leave the programme
  • the programme is terminated by NZI or EROAD.

NZI will acknowledge, by email, that you are no longer participating in the programme.

You will no longer be eligible to have any accepted qualifying claim excess waived.

No.

Provided you meet the terms and conditions for an excess waiver, all you need to do is provide a copy of your EROAD Safe Driving Rewards Eligibility Report or Leaderboard Report and Daily Activity Report from the day of the accident with the preceding 28 days’ data. Producing these reports is simple, please visit the EROAD help site for instructions. Valid claims must be lodged within 30 days of the date of the claimable driving loss.

NZI will do the rest.

No, there is no need to wait until your insurance is due for renewal. As long as you have applicable EROAD hardware units installed in your vehicle on an eligible services plan you can sign up today.

If your policy is subject to a Burning Cost or Profit Share adjustment, obtaining an excess waiver under the Excess Waiver programme may result in a higher premium for that policy. This is because the premium adjustment at the end of the insurance period is calculated based on the total claims cost for the period, including claims that would otherwise have been subject to an excess. If you have any questions about this and what’s best for you, please contact your broker or NZI representative.
