Have you been affected by the South Canterbury hailstorm?

Latest Update

Third Largest Storm of the Century

As you may have seen in the news, the Timaru hailstorm is now being described as the third largest weather event in New Zealand this century. Total insurance costs are expected to exceed $83 million. Only the Lower North Island storms in February 2004 and Cyclone Debbie in April 2017 cost more.

More Than 12,000 Claims

We have received more than 12,000 claims from this storm for vehicles, properties, boats and more. Due to the large number of claims, repairs are taking longer than usual. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Facing Challenges

We are facing supply and resource issues. Hailstorms in Australia have caused delays in getting some vehicle parts, with many parts having to be shipped from other countries. There’s also a limited supply of building resources such as scaffolding, which affects how many properties we can repair at one time.

Delivering On Our Promise

However, we’ve taken extra steps to address these issues and help speed up the repairs process. We’ve set up two additional specialist vehicle repair sites. We have also brought onboard more local builders, suppliers and contractors to help cover the property repair workload.

Thank You

Our objective during the entire recovery operation has been to ensure we meet the needs of our customers as quickly as possible, and we continue to work hard to achieve that goal. Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.
