How to make a claim
NZI and the Earthquake Commission (EQC) have agreed that all earthquake claims will be managed by NZI. This should ensure a smoother way forward for all our customers with an earthquake claim.
If you’re an NZI or Lumley Insurance customer, your broker is the first port of call to make a claim. They'll help you throughout the claims process, and will liaise with us to get your claim sorted for you.
Don't worry if you've already lodged your claim with the EQC, they'll pass your details over to us and we'll take care of the rest.
Here's some more information about the new process - read the FAQs here.
Take photos of the damage
If your home, car or contents have been damaged by an earthquake, it’s important to take photos of the damage. More damage can sometimes be sustained as a result of aftershocks so it’s a good idea to take photos on an ongoing basis. Report any damage as soon as possible.
As we go through a period of aftershocks, it’s important that we look out for each other and remember to stay safe. You’ll find more information here
on staying safe in an earthquake.
In the case of an earthquake:
• Get into the “drop, cover, hold” position – the best place for this is under a sturdy piece of furniture, like a table. Exit when it’s safe to do so, and do not use lifts or elevators.
• If you’re outside, move away from trees, buildings and power lines, then drop, cover and hold.
• If you’re driving, safely pull over (away from buildings, trees and power lines, and remain in the car until the shaking stops. Avoid bridges or overpasses.
