NEXT STEPS FOR NZI CUSTOMERS IN THE RESIDENTIAL GREEN ZONE 28 October 2011
The Government today announced three new technical categories for flat land in the residential green zone.
These categories (TC1, TC2 and TC3) are based on ground conditions and may require different levels of land and foundation work to repair or rebuild your home.
In summary, properties in TC1 and TC2 can be built according to current guidelines, while properties zoned TC3 will require site-specific geotechnical investigations and new foundation designs.
To check your property’s zoning visit www.landcheck.org.nz
Details about the categories can be found on www.cera.govt.nz
The new classifications will help us plan our repair and rebuild timetable:
· We need to work out the effect each classification will have on foundations and other repairs.
· We may need to wait until the Department of Building and Housing releases its new foundation guidelines before starting work on any TC3 properties.
Thank you for your continued patience. We will be in contact with our customers in the coming weeks to further explain the implications of this announcement.

Update for earthquake claimants
We know it has been a difficult time for everyone in Canterbury, waiting for the outcome of their claims.
A letter with more information is being posted to you soon, but in the meantime, here is an overview of our assessment timetable for the residential zones.
Assessments in commercial areas cannot begin until the government has completed its land assessments in those areas. Read more >>
Government releases latest Christchurch land information
23 June 2011: The Government has released land information that categorises all greater Christchurch residential land based on its suitability for continued residential use following the earthquakes and aftershocks that began on 4 September 2010.
Land has been mapped into four zones – red, orange, green and white. Homeowners can check the zoning of their property via a website www.landcheck.org.nz or by contacting the government helpline on 0800 779 997. Further information is also available on the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA)'s website www.cera.govt.nz

Underwriting changes following June 13 aftershocks
Can I apply for a new policy in the Canterbury area?
Due to the large aftershocks experienced in the Canterbury region on 13 June 2011, we’re currently unable to offer quotes or new policies on any Home and Contents or Business policies that are not already insured by NZI. However, we are able to consider undamaged Motor Vehicles, Caravans, Trailers and Boats; although any new policy will be subject to a stand down period for earthquake cover. We continue to reassess this position and our focus remains on assisting existing NZI customers and assessing insurance cover for them on a case-by-case basis.
NZI Earthquake Claim Pack
Getting started on your contents claim and claims for losses not covered by the EQC.
We’re working hard to help make the claim process as smooth as possible. While there's still a significant amount of coordination and consultation to take place with all parties on how land will be remediated, there are some practical things NZI customers can do to keep things moving - like getting started on contents claims and claims for losses not covered by the EQC.
Download our handy claim pack which includes:
- A guide to what the EQC covers and what NZI covers
- A checklist of typical household items to help you work out what you may need to replace
- A claim form
- Helpful information and advice.
Even if you’ve already lodged a claim with NZI you may find the pack useful. The more information you can provide us with now, means we’ll have a head start when we get to your claim.
